Welcome back to the final home stretch of the school year! This morning our school family started off their day as usual with a brain smart start. The students reconnected and shared about their breaks. Everyone seemed to really enjoy being back together. The class was also able to go to the Marine Lab today. Students had a great time learning and exploring animals from the ocean. Ask your child what was the most exciting thing about the Marine Lab!

Next week, let's aim for 100% of folders turned in by Monday! You can do it! *Two students are turning in their signed reflection sheets on a regular basis. Way to go! If you notice a reflection sheet in your scholar's backpack, please take some time to discuss their choices and plan, sign the back, and return it to school with them the next day. The Book Fair is Here! The PTA is very excited to bring the Scholastic Book Fair back to SASC! During the week of February 14th-17th we will turn the theater into a camping themed, reading oasis with many fun activities for our students to enjoy. Our hope is this event will help instill a lifelong love of reading in each of our students. Every purchase made during the Fair and in our online fair earns money for our school. We’re excited to see all our school family enjoy this event! Please visit https://sascpta.org/Event.aspx for more information. We are in great need of volunteers to make this event run smoothly. Please sign up to volunteer at https://sascpta.org/Volunteer.aspx.

*Help! We received money and a permission slip today for the book fair without a name. If you gave your child money today and a permission slip filled in with pencil, please email us and let us know who it belongs to. If it is not claimed, your child will not be able to shop at the book fair.
*Ms. Sarah and Ms. Jess have added School Family Time at the end of each day before dismissal. This gives the gift of reflection time for those students who had an oops on making helpful and safe choices. The reflection is a written document that your scholar completes during School Family Time and includes a plan to help keep it safe next time. The student will bring it home and share the plan with family. We are all in this together! *February 17th - Friendship Day - Students may bring in notes or cards for one another, but food or candy of any kind is not allowed. Feel free to get creative with what you send in. One year a student made small simple pieces of sketched art for each classmate. Another year a child designed everyone's names in a special way using a computer program. A reminder to include everyone in your gift in the class. A list of student names was email to you on Monday. |

...a class brother or sister is having a hard time to wish them well and remain calm. Far too often do we think it is our job to control others. Frustration ensues and now we have entered our emotional state. To return to our executive state, we fill our hearts with love for the person having a hard time. When we exhale, we send that love out into the universe. This helps us realize that something is happening in front of us, not to us. Practice at home by creating scenarios or role playing. We are beginning to transition to a new grading scale for our classwork. This is the Marzano learning scale and will show a number 1-4. The scale key is as follows: 4- I can complete the task/mastered the skill and can teach someone else how to do it. 3- I have mastered the skill/completed the task. 2-I can complete the task with assistance. 1- I am unable to complete the task/I do not understand. We will be using this scale in class as well for students to reflect on tasks and behaviors in the classroom.

Literacy: In Fundations, we have started learning trigraphs, digraph blends, bonus letters, and trick words. Ask your student about all the systems and rules they are learning!
Math: Scientists (third graders) are learning multiplication patterns of 2's, 5's, 9's, and 10's and the 0 and 1 properties of multiplication.
Artists (second graders) are learning even and odd numbers.
Theme: Ms. Sarah has decided to keep the immigration work for portfolios. You will be proud when you see how hard your child worked on this lesson! We have moved on to learning about Native American tribes, where in the country they lived, and what types of different structures they lived in. There has also been talk of what we are doing for showcase this theme.
Writing: Our writing center is up and running! Each student has a folder with a narrative they have started (about the fall season), word work using 10 Dolch words, and resources to assist with working independently. Those students who produced a first draft of their narrative have received instruction on how to improve their writing and are editing for a final draft.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION for the Fall Festival:
* Costumes are allowed to be worn, but must be school appropriate.
* Scary masks and weapons may not be brought in.
* We discourage sending your child with accessories. Any costume pieces left at school on Friday will be available for pickup on Monday. This may prevent your child from using pieces if they dress up on Halloween.
* All students will be held accountable for bringing their costume pieces home at the end of the day. Discuss this responsibility with your child prior to dropping them off on Friday.
* Students may wear their costumes all day. We strongly recommend sending in a change of clothing. Some costumes are itchy and/or uncomfortable.
* If you do not want your child to participate in the Fall Festival, contact your child's classroom teacher. Alternative activities will be provided for the duration of the fall crafts and activities in the morning. Please note that students wearing costumes will be in classrooms and hallways throughout the day.

we breathed todayAs your children found out today in class, our class’ MobyMax account has been reset. Unfortunately, this reset does mean that all of their previous work and data has been lost. Throughout this week as students are using computers at school, they will be taking the placement tests again for subjects such as: Math, Vocabulary, Science, Social Studies, and Reading. Another difference to the program is that game time is no longer available. We found that earning game time and attempts to use the game time at school had become a large distraction for the students. They will still be able to earn badges to celebrate their successes. In the coming weeks, we will be actively looking at data from their computer time together. We know they’ll be very excited to see their progress! Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
